We had the opportunity to sit down with Barry J. Beck, founder and CEO of Evenly Orthodontics, to learn more about the company’s origin, its impact on the dental industry, and the future of tech-enabled patient care.
Establishing Company Identity and Values
What sparked the idea for launching your company, and what specific gap or need were you aiming to address in the market?
Evenly Orthodontics was founded to address a significant gap in the orthodontic care market, which was often fragmented, inefficient, and disconnected from the modern patient experience. Evenly identified an opportunity to modernize the model by integrating advanced technology with centralized orthodontic expertise and remote monitoring. This approach not only makes it easier for general dentists to deliver expert aligner treatments in-office, but also transforms orthodontic care into a personalized, high-touch service.
Was there a pivotal moment early in the company’s journey that shaped its direction or accelerated its growth?
While leading Bluemercury, we noticed a growing consumer focus on health,
wellness, and oral aesthetics. Customers were increasingly aware of the connection
between straight teeth, overall appearance, and systemic inflammation, recognizing that
oral misalignment could impact more than just their smile.
Motivated by this shift, we partnered with Dr. Wayne Hickory, DMD, MS, MDS, one of
the nation’s most accomplished orthodontists. Dr. Hickory has treated more Invisalign
patients than any other U.S. provider and is widely regarded as a pioneer in the use of
aligners for children and teens. Together, we launched Evenly in a former Bluemercury
storefront in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood.
Within six months, the studio was treating hundreds of patients, many referred by local
dentists. We asked these referring dentists whether they would adopt a platform that allowed them to keep patients in-house while delivering expert results, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Evenly quickly onboarded 90 dentists and began a nationwide expansion. Today, Evenly
supports hundreds of dental practices across 20 states, serving tens of thousands of
patients. Evenly’s growth reflects our company’s mission to modernize orthodontics, making
Expert care is more accessible, efficient, and aligned with the expectations of today’s
health-conscious consumer.
Core Values and Culture
What core values define your company culture, and how are those values reflected in day-to-day decision-making?
Evenly’s culture is built on several core values, including innovation, agility, collaboration, integrity, and patient-centricity. This is evident in programs like weekly remote check-ins, expansion into underserved markets, and community outreach initiatives for frontline workers. Evenly’s innovation drives investment in AI, 3D technology, and remote monitoring tools.
How would you summarize the mission that drives your organization, both internally and in its impact on customers?
The mission of Evenly Orthodontics is to reimagine orthodontic care by blending high-tech innovation with the human touch, creating confident smiles while unlocking new opportunities for dentists. This mission guides internal processes and significantly impacts the customer experience by ensuring high-quality, accessible care.
Challenges and Growth
Can you share a major challenge your company has encountered, whether operational or cultural, and how your team navigated it?
As Evenly Orthodontics rapidly grew to serve over 50,000 patients, the company proactively enhanced its customer support by bringing in experts to evaluate and refine processes. This strategic move resulted in ensuring every patient and dentist feels valued and supported.
What accomplishments or milestones do you view as defining moments in your company’s growth or reputation?
Evenly Orthodontics has achieved several milestones that have defined our growth and reputation. These include the official launch in 2020, establishing over 800 dentist partnerships by 2022, serving more than 50,000 patients, and being named to LinkedIn’s Top Startups list in 2024.
Employee Development and Community Engagement
How do you foster professional development and employee well-being across a fast-growing, technology-driven team?
Evenly Orthodontics promotes professional development and employee well-being by providing ongoing training, encouraging open feedback, and fostering a collaborative culture where innovation and teamwork are paramount. Evenly creates opportunities for employees to take initiative and contribute in meaningful ways, cultivating an environment where everyone can thrive.
Are there specific community programs, charitable partnerships, or access-to-care initiatives your company is especially proud to support?
We take pride in our program that provides Invisalign treatments at no out-of-pocket cost to first responders, leveraging their existing benefits. This initiative is part of our broader effort to raise awareness and accessibility, beginning with the NYPD and expanding to other first responder groups.
When evaluating success, what key indicators do you rely on beyond revenue, whether in customer outcomes, employee engagement, or long-term impact?
Success for us goes beyond financial metrics. We evaluate patient outcomes by tracking treatment effectiveness, satisfaction, and smile improvements. Customer engagement is also measured through the satisfaction of our dental partners and how easily they integrate our solutions. Long-term impact is another crucial indicator, where we aim to expand access to orthodontic care and foster healthier communities.
